Repair, diagnosis and when to stop paying for repairs

Refrigerants, efficiency ratings and changing rules

The regulatory side of this trade moves, and it moves in ways that cost building owners money if nobody is tracking it. Efficiency minimums are now expressed in SEER2 and EER2 rather than the older ratings, which changed how equipment is compared. The refrigerant phase-down is the bigger story: the high-GWP refrigerants that most installed systems still run on are being stepped down under federal rules, newer equipment ships with lower-GWP alternatives, and service refrigerant for older systems gets scarcer and more expensive as that plays out. That does not mean a working system needs replacing today, but it does belong in any decision about repairing an ageing one. All of our technicians are EPA Section 608 certified, which is the federal requirement for anyone handling refrigerant.
