His Story

From Argentina
to Florida's
HVAC Leader

Immigrating from Argentina to Florida at the age of 18, Walter Ormazabal left his home country and parents behind to pursue the American dream. Growing up in Miami in the early 1980s, Walter became a part of the vast Cuban culture that dominated South Florida, adopting the culture as his own and creating a life-long network of hard-working respectable business class associates.

During his path to HVAC excellence, many a ground was covered in different facets of life and employment. Not many people can say they've grown up on rural countryside racing horses, owned their own financial company, have been a candidate for the RNC, and among many other things an honest God-fearing pillar of society. Now, you might say that I'm blowing smoke…but Walter's awards and accreditations speak for themselves. In fact, the man is so humble that persuading him to make this information public knowledge was like pulling teeth…but I'm glad I pulled because beyond business, I believe people need to see the side of the man that I see every day.

1980

If you were in South Florida in the late 1980s, you might have seen a young Walter driving around in his little yellow pickup truck, tools in the back, driving from job to job earning his keep working for local HVAC companies. However, it wasn't long before more than a few customers and employers alike identified Walter as someone who was going places and fully capable of forming his own HVAC company.

1991

In 1991, Walter Ormazabal established Pilar Appliance Services which was later adapted to Pilar Services, Inc. (PSI), a full-service HVAC mechanical contractor accommodating both commercial and residential clientele. For more than 30 years, PSI has been "Servicing the Greater State of Florida" with pride and professionalism.

Consecutively awarded "Businessman of the Year" by the National Republican Congressional Committee, serving as an Honorary Chairman on the Business Advisory Council, and contributing to the Republican National Committee (RNC) by running for Committeeman in Florida State District 35, Walter has made Pilar Services a trusted name for Federal Contracts.

Aside from receiving several awards from the HVAC industry titan, Carrier, for "Exceeding Quota as Top Business Partner of CSD Florida", Walter's dedication to his craft has also earned him numerous "Excellence in Construction" achievements for his hard work on projects including Miami Dade College's Baccalaureate Science Lab, and the Haulover Marina Dockmaster Complex.

Community & Family

An active member of the Latin Builders Association (LBA) since 2008, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) since 2005, and an extensive history of volunteer work with the Miami-Dade Police Department's Community Affairs Bureau — it is safe to say that Mr. Ormazabal's name is well known and respected all throughout South Florida.

Walter's commitment to helping the community does not end there. He invests in our children because he wholeheartedly believes that the youth is the future. A Good Works Partner with United Way, and a Volunteer at the Archdiocese of Miami's youth program, are just some of the ways he is helping mold our future.

A devoted husband and loving father of 3 affluent children, his oldest son following in his footsteps as a business developer here at PSI, Walter's leadership shines both at his home and his office.

You might have recognized the Christian fish logo prominently displayed on all of PSI's branding, with the slogan "Be Cool... He's My Boss." That is Walter Ormazabal's motto and way of life.

Thank you for choosing Pilar Services, Inc.

The Company He Built

From Appliance Repair to Mechanical Contracting

Pilar Services did not start as an HVAC contractor. It started in 1991 as Pilar Appliance Services — a much smaller proposition, built on the kind of work where the customer is standing next to you while you diagnose the problem and your reputation is settled the same afternoon. The shift to full-service mechanical contracting came gradually, as commercial clients began asking for systems rather than appliances, and it is the reason the company still measures itself on whether the customer would call again rather than on the size of the invoice.

That trajectory shows in the range of work the company now takes on. Residential service calls and condominium replacements sit alongside commercial plant — chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, rooftop units — industrial and process cooling, and federal and government contracts with the documentation discipline those require. National accounts including UPS, USPS, Taco Bell and Toys R Us have run through the same organisation that answers a homeowner's after-hours call, which is deliberate: the standards do not fork by customer size.

The recognition on this page reflects both halves of that. The awards from Carrier, including Exceeding Quota as Top Business Partner of CSD Florida, speak to the commercial side. The Excellence in Construction achievements point at delivery on genuinely demanding projects — Miami Dade College's Baccalaureate Science Lab, where a teaching laboratory's environmental control is not negotiable, and the Haulover Marina Dockmaster Complex, a marine-exposure site where salt air attacks equipment continuously. Neither is a job you win on price alone.

Walter's insistence on training is the least visible part of the legacy and arguably the most important. Continuing education is stressed for management and field personnel alike, with in-house training at every employee level. That matters because the technical ground under this trade keeps shifting: efficiency ratings have moved to SEER2 and EER2, the federal refrigerant phase-down is steadily changing what equipment ships with and what is economic to service, and the Florida Building Code's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone provisions in Miami-Dade and Broward govern what may be installed and how it must be fastened. A technician who stopped learning a decade ago cannot advise an owner properly today. The company is licensed, certified and insured in the State of Florida and employs EPA Section 608 certified technicians.

The membership list — Associated Builders and Contractors, BOMA, the Florida Air Conditioning Contractors Association, the Latin Chamber of Commerce of the USA and the Latin Builders Association — traces the other thing Walter built: a place in South Florida's business community, not just a customer list. The company history covers that ground in more detail, and the services page sets out what the organisation does today.
